Crafts Council of Ireland Signals Green Light for Mobile Technology

Council's Use of Audio Touring, Is a First for an Irish Art Gallery

SAN FRANCISCO, CA, February 20, 2010 /Museums PR News/ -- Guide by Cell, the nation's leading mobile technology company for cultural institutions, announced today that the Crafts Council of Ireland is piloting a audio tour at its Gallery at Castle Yard, Kilkenny. The Crafts Council, the national design and economic development organisation for Ireland's craft industry, selected Guide by Cell's mobile technology to enhance visitors' experience of a unique exhibit featuring creative art pieces made of glass. Guide by Cell's relationship with the Crafts Council gives visitors wonderful opportunities to use cell phones to experience an art gallery tour all about glass.

"Glass is a very cold medium and it's still quite a mystery how artists create art from it. The Guide by Cell mobile phone tour gives visitors a sense about the glassmaking process and the artists who create art from glass, said Leslie Ryan Education and Outreach Officer at the Crafts Council of Ireland. "Visitors are able to hear the artists describe how they work with glass and how the various processes come together. The tour has created a very animated layer for people coming in to see the exhibit and expecting a traditional tour. Glass is so static and with the audio, the images are more profound. I think that this tour is working very well for this particular exhibition."

The Irish craft industry is comprised of pottery, glass, jewellery, textiles and knitwear, and furniture. The Crafts Council mission is to support these crafts by fostering the growth and commercial success of the Irish craft industry by communicating Ireland's unique identity and quality design, innovation and competitiveness.

"Irish craftsmanship is truly beautiful and rich in Ireland's history and culture," said David Asheim, President and Founder, Guide by Cell. "Providing our mobile technology to help tell the story about the wonderful tradition of glassmaking offers visitors an exciting new way to experience the exhibition, learn about the tradition, and to interact with the artists."

Guide by Cell's unique mobile phone solutions for the Crafts Council is the first time the company has implemented a tour in Ireland. Guide by Cell has developed many other tours for cultural institutions within the U.K. and Canada and is proud to have the Crafts Council among them.
